cropped-atwater4.jpgAtwater Village is located just north of Silver Lake over the Glendale-Hyperion Bridge, with the Los Angeles River to the west and Glendale to the north and east.  So far, Atwater Village has managed to maintain the feeling of a sleepy small town; however, it is experiencing dramatic demographic changes due to rapid gentrification as young creatives seek out more affordable housing.  The two main corridors through Atwater are Glendale Boulevard and Los Feliz Boulevard.

Atwater Village is known as the original home to headquarters of the Van de Kamp Bakery, a chain of bakeries and coffee shops with trademark “windmill” buildings and signs that were found throughout LA up through the 1950s.  Built in 1930 and designed by New York architect J. Edwart Hopkins to resemble a Dutch 16th century farmhouse, the building stood vacant and in disrepair until its recent rebirth as part of Los Angeles Community College’s northeast satellite campus.  The Van de Kamp name is also linked to The Tam O’Shanter Inn, which Walter Van de Kamp and business partner Lawrence Frank established in 1922.  It thrives to this day and is the oldest standing establishment in Atwater.   The Village was also once home to Franciscan Pottery (fka Gladding McBean), a well-known manufacturer of pottery and dinnerware.
